Compaq presario f500 display problem?

My computer starts up normaly, the compaq symbol will show up, and it will say windows is starting up, then when it looks like its supposed to go to the start up screen where its black, it goes blacker (the lcd screen turns off?) but it still runs. like i can hear the little logon in chime, i even typed my pword word and i could hear the sound that verified i had just logged on. it works when i run it in safe mode, so why doesnt it display properly when it runs in normally? is it a driver not starting up maybe? idk i need help/
