Does anyone know what a triangular-shaped bug is?

I work in the yard a lot and saw a black bug shaped just like a triangle. It was in the street actually, and I picked it up with a shovel and moved it over to the gr so that it would not get run over. I have seen more unusual bugs and bees around lately, and I do not recognize any of them as being native to my state.
