I have 3 credit cards that have a total balance of $6000?

i have been paying the min. balance for awhile and the apr's have gone thru the roof. I want to consolidate these cards into one and lower my apr. However, I have only heard negative about debt consolidation and am wondering the best way to go about knocking out my credit card debt? Any suggestions?
